BEIJING – 16 policemen were killed and 16 others injured when attackers threw two grenades into a police station in the desert oasis town of Kashgar, in the far west, after driving a truck into the station at 8 a.m. Two men were arrested.
Even before that raid, Chinese officials had transformed Beijing into a giant fortress. Surface-to-air missiles take aim at the sky above the Olympic stadiums here. Surveillance cameras mounted on light poles scan sidewalks. Police officers search thousands of cars and trucks entering the city. N.Y. Times

BEIJING – Former Olympic speedskater Joey Cheek had his visa revoked by Chinese authorities Wednesday, hours before he was set to travel to Beijing to promote his effort urging China to help make peace in the war-torn Darfur section of Sudan.
Cheek, the president and co-founder of a collection of Olympic athletes known as Team Darfur, was planning to spend about two weeks in China, when he received an unexpected call from authorities.
The 2006 American gold medalist said they told him they were denying him entrance into the country and were “not required to give a reason.” MSNBC

China is refusing to guarantee that it won’t censor the Internet during this summer’s Olympic Games, but insists that the international media will still be able to function normally. Officials from China’s Technology Ministry took a somewhat odd opportunity to speak about its censorship plans during a press conference after the Olympic torch relay crossed Mount Everest. They said that while the government would be able to “guarantee as much [access] as possible,” there’s no way that China would turn off the Great Firewall entirely during the Games.
“China has always been very cautious when it comes to the Internet,” Technology Minister Wan Gang said, according to Reuters. “I’ve not got any clear information about which sites will be shut or screened. But to protect the youth there are controls on some unhealthy web sites.” ARS TECHNICA

A group of 55 Greek motorcyclists who set off from Athens last month in a bid to drive to Beijing with the aim of promoting peace have been refused permission to enter China due to security fears, it emerged yesterday.
The participants in the “Routes of the Olive Tree” trip, who set off from Greece on July 14, were hoping to deliver an olive branch to Beijing to coincide with the Olympic Games, which will begin on Friday.
But Chinese authorities have decided to prevent the group from entering the country despite pleas from Greece’s Interior Ministry, the Council of Europe and the Greek ambassador in Beijing.
Security in China was tight ahead of the Olympics but has been stepped up even more after 16 police officers were killed in an attack in the western Xinjiang region earlier this week.
The motorcyclists, who are currently in Kazakhstan, will head to Moscow instead. http://www.ekathimerini.com/

BEIJING — The International Olympic Committee’s chief medical official expressed confidence Tuesday that air pollution will not pose a major risk to athletes and visitors at the Beijing Games.
Arne Ljungqvist, chairman of the IOC medical commission, said the committee is evaluating the city’s air quality based on standards set by the World Health Organization.
“Those standards are fairly tough to meet, but in many respects the Beijing area does so,” Ljungqvist said on the opening day of the IOC’s three-day session. “I’m sure, I’m confident the air quality will not prove to pose major problems to the athletes and to the visitors in Beijing.”
