The fact that Domenico Cornacchia, chef and owner of Assaggi, used to be a chef at Café Milano, one of my absolutely favorite restaurants in DC, was enough credentials for me to try Assaggi, an Italian restaurant and mozzarella bar he opened two years ago in Bethesda.
Horray! Finally some food that is the closest to Italian in the DC area. This concept of “mozzarella bar” was introduced by Assaggi in the United States, and it features mozzarella cheese imported from various Italian regions, as well the best from American cheese-making companies. Mozzarella was not the best I have tasted, however the condiments accompanying the cheese and especially the jam made of green tomatoes was extraordinary. Assaggi serves along with these an extraordinary rustic bread. The restaurant is famous for the pasta. However that day they had a special blackened fish that really sounded (and tasted) great.
Assaggi is a cozy restaurant that reminds me a of a European Cafe’. Small tables, discrete lighting, and the only thing that reminded me that I am still in the US was the level of noise! At some point I will return for the pasta.
